Dr. Lina Hartocollis, PhD, LCSW

In my thirty-plus years of professional experience I have marveled at peoples’ resilience and their capacity for growth and change. My goal as a therapist is to accompany my clients on their own journeys of discovery, growth, and healing; to help them connect with internal and external sources of strength and find a better path forward.

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming. Along with making sure the therapist is well trained, experienced, and reputable, it’s also very important to make sure the therapist is a good fit for you—someone who you feel comfortable with, can relate to and can trust. This sometimes means interviewing more than one therapist on the way to finding the one that feels right—not something that most people who are looking for a therapist have the emotional energy or time to do.

I recommend at least starting your search for a therapist by asking people you know and trust if they can suggest someone. Most of the folks I work with are referred to me by people who know me or have worked with me as colleagues or clients. That way we already know a bit about each other coming in, and are reasonably comfortable that it’s a good fit before we move forward to build a trusting relationship and start our work together.

About My Practice

In my private practice I work with adults of all ages who are suffering from anxiety and depression; struggling with relationship issues; navigating life transitions and upheavals; dealing with grief and loss; and going through other problems of living that come with being human. I am trained to treat individuals and couples, and I enjoy working with both.

Alongside my clinical practice I spent nearly twenty-five years at the University of Pennsylvania, where I taught social work masters and doctoral students and held senior administrative posts: as Dean of Students and as founding Director of the Clinical Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) program—the first social work practice doctorate in the country.

Since retiring from Penn I have been able to devote more time to my private practice, doing what I love: providing psychotherapy to individuals and couples. I also provide mentoring and clinical supervision to beginning and advanced level clinicians.

I have trained in and taught a number of individual and couples therapy approaches that I use in my practice: Psychodynamic psychotherapy; Relational therapy; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Mindfulness-based techniques; Trauma-based interventions; and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT); and I continue to stay informed about the latest research on best practices and promising new treatments.
